Rather surprisingly this male Black Rhino showed absolutely no fear of my 13 yr old daughter........a truly brave beast! :-)
Black Rhino (Diceros bicornis); note the hooked semi-prehensile upper lip. These rhinos are mainly browsers of shrubs, whereas the square-lipped White rhino is a short-grass grazer.
This Black Rhino is called Barak (he was named before a certain US president came to power; I was told the name means "blesed" in Swahili); he was originally wild but developed blindness and was taken in to "protective custody". It is possible to get close to him from a viewing platform but despite the appearance of this image it is not possible to get in beside him (this image has the re-inforced bars cropped out). It is not safe to get close to a Black Rhino that is not habituated and I would not of course put my daughter at such risk!
