Water Buffalo are tied to waterholes in the dry season. During prolonged droughts (as occurred in 2009) all available grass surrounding such waterholes is consumed. Wild Pigs can dig up roots whilst elephants and deer can browse but if there is no grass then buffalo suffer badly as witnessed by the painfully thin animals in this image.
