Such slave ships would berth at James island and similar places along the coast of West Africa to pick up their cargo of unfortunates -many would not survive the harrowing transatlantic journey as they lay shackled in the depressing darkness of the ship's hold with no provision for toiletting and with the most meagre of rations.
