Dupplin Cross -back view

Dunning, Strathearn

During renovation work on the stone a latin inscription in the panel on the basal stem was identified and partially read indicating that the stone was probably commissioned by King Constantin mac Fergus a Pictish King whose reign predates the supposed formation of the Kingdom of Alba (Scotland). The style of the stone carvings clearly differs from standard Pictish stones and suggests that significant cultural changes were already occurring which might have favoured the amalgamation of the 'Gaelic Kingdom' of Dalriata with Pictland -and this without the need for conquest or bloodshed.
