A deep pit is dug into which the eggs are laid. The nest is created as a wide depression with the front flippers before the actual nest-pit is scooped out with the hind flippers. When digging the female has a series of automated robotic movements of her hind flippers (almost like-brake-dancing movements). She digs & scoops with one hind-flipper then rotates her whole body to do the same with the other hind-flipper making only one scoop each time before changing flippers.
Once egg-laying is completed the nest pit is filled-in & the whole nest-site is covered with sand. She then goes on to dig a few 'dummy nests' nearby which help camouflage the site of the real nest.
Apart from humans nests are predated by Racoons, feral dogs & Black Vultures.
