The Hunas Falls hotel is situated in the grounds of an old plantation which grew tea, coffee and various spices such as cinnamon. It lies in the hill country above Kandy being about a one hour drive along a slow, narrow and tortuous road. The hotel is a beautifully designed amenity-rich modern building thats sits in landscaped grounds adjacent to a small lake & waterfall. Trails lead from the hotel up into secondary forest with small patches of primary forest. The whole area is bird rich with a mix of lowland rain forest species (eg Yellow-fronted Barbet and Sri Lankan Scimitar Babbler), montane species (eg Ceylon Wood Pigeon and Southern Hill Myna) and some dry zone species (eg Oriental White-Eye and Ceylon Small Barbet). The area is also good for raptors including Black Eagle (saw twice) and occasionally Mountain Hawk Eagle (a distant bird seen from our balcony was probably this species) whilst there is a resident pair of Brahminy Kite at the lake (which until recently also supported a pair of Brown Fish Owls and hopefully will do so again!). Sadly we only spent two nights (one full day) here; this hotel would make a perfect base for a longer period however some of the montane endemics are missing from the area and the trails have leeches!
