A hike to "Worlds End"

At Horton Plains Sri Lanka's central mountain massif is shaved into a lofty tabletop of rolling grassland punctuated by rhododendron scrub and bordered by tracts of stunted elfin cloud forest. At night temperatures here can drop to below zero whilst during the day this plateau is frequently obscured by mist and soaked by cold drizzling rains. What more could I ask for?

Horton Plains is a National Park complete with a visitor centre and a series of trails. It is possible to walk to the edge of the plateau where the escarpment drops precipitously at the viewpoint known as "World's End" (there is also a Little World's End). From there the trail leads on to Baker's Falls before doubling back to the startpoint at the visitor centre. The round trip of 13-14kms passes through cloud forest & over open moorland. In a period of only a few hours a number of different weather conditions can manifest including cold biting rain, heavy mists and intense sunshine; we experienced the lot but were particularly fortunate as the mist cleared for a time whilst we were at the World's End viewpoint.
