Like humans elephants modify their enviroment (by clearing scrub & trees). As a result of elephant activity the Mara's central & western grass plain is one of the best places in the world to observe grazing animals & their predators.

The Mara holds good numbers of elephants both in matriarch-led family groups & as grumpy lone males. Getting images of them doing anything other than eating proved well-nigh impossible!
