Palearctic Waders

A number of Palearctic waders winter in The Gambia -many in fairly inaccessible sites such as the Tanbi wetlands. Common, Marsh, Wood, Green and Curlew Sandpipers are fairly common as are Whimbrel, Greenshank, Redshank, Black-tailed and Bar-tailed Godwits, Little Stint, Sanderling and Turnstone. Upriver freshwater marshes can also hold some surprising records but are rarely visited by birders; for instance Prufu swamp near Basse has a number of previous records for Great Snipe!!
