The first position light signals installed by the Norfolk & Western Railway was on the Shenandoah Division between Hagerstown, MD and Shenandoah, VA in February 1924. By December 1926 the southern portion of the division between Shenandoah and Roanoke was activated. Nestled in the Shenandoah Valley 65 miles north of Roanoke is the hamlet of Midvale. On February 2, 2008 a beautiful winter sunset precedes what is sure to be a bitterly cold winter night in the valley as an excellent day of railfanning draws to a close.
