Weldon

Not many companies can claim they've been in business for 100 years. The Canadian National Railway (CN) is one such entity. Locomotive No. 3880 on the CN roster is adorned with a special emblem to denote the company's 100 year of operation. On July 2 I was fortunate to capture the 3880 leading CSX G757, a combined grain/sulphur train, across the massive trestle in Weldon, NC. When the train left Richmond it was just the two CN motors hauling tank cars loaded with molten sulfur. They stopped at Collier Yard in Petersburg and picked up the two CSX engines along with a consist of loaded covered hoppers filled with grain. The 3,688' span was built by the Atlantic Coast Line Railroad (ACL) to carry their trains over the Roanoke River, the streets of Weldon, and their primary competitor - the Seaboard Air Line Railroad (SAL). The SAL passed beneath the ACL back where the sixth car in the train is visible on the short plate girder span. The roof of the joint ACL/SAL passenger station is visible above the fourth locomotive.
