Bluestone

"Excuse me, sir! Do you know the way to Bluefield?" Fellow railfan and compadre extraordinaire Cliff Middlebrook chats with the engineer of Norfolk Southern train 66N at Bluestone, West Virginia. Approaching in the distance is a set of pushers operating under the guise of J58. During the early part of the 20th Century this was one of the busiest junctions on the Norfolk & Western Railway. A passenger station and two story interlocking tower once occupied this very spot. The operator here at SU Tower controlled both main line and branch line movements including the endless parade of coal trains streaming off the nearby Pocahontas and Bluestone Branch lines. All told there were in excess of 100 movements per day through Bluestone Junction during the glory years of coal mining and rail passenger service in the Pocahontas coal region.
