Late in the afternoon of June 15, 2002 former Conrail SD50 No. 5400 lugs a heavy ballast train upgrade at Shawsville, VA. The cloud of black exhaust is the result of a wheel slip which occurred just as I snapped the shutter. This locomotive was originally numbered 6700 under Conrail ownership and was their class unit in the SD50 fleet. This unit was rebuilt by Norfolk Southern to SD40E No. 6324. Scanned from a 35 mm negative. The 5400 was retired in late 2009.
