To most people the old signals at West AY appeared as if they were from the SCL era. A closer examination reveals something drastically different though. While the signal heads themselves aren't that old, the pole they're mounted on was going on 89 years old when this picture was taken in October 2007. This is one of the original signals installed when the line between West AY and Meadow, known then as the James River Branch, was upgraded to double track in 1919. When this particular signal was installed it held two semaphore blades. This photo and next one show where the two blades were mounted.
