The ACL signal bridge at Elm City (A128.2) stood adjacent to the US 301 overpass just north of town. Note how the signal heads are mounted below the horizontal structure to allow approaching trains to see the aspects under the highway bridge. When this signal bridge was installed in the 1940's the highway bridge didn't exist. It was built in later years when US 301 was rerouted to bypass downtown Elm City. Prior to US 301 being reconfigured, there was a grade crossing just beyond the signal bridge approximately where the defect detector is located. Ultimately the signal bridge was replaced by a pair of Safetrans pole signals in 2007.
