Amtrak 80, the northbound Carolinian, knocks down the signal at Rock Quarry Road in Sharpsburg, North Carolina. In just a few minutes the train will be slowing for a station stop in Rocky Mount. Then a dash through Carolina's tobacco country and into the Old Dominion towards Petersburg, Richmond, and points north. CSX's A-Line through North Carolina is littered with Atlantic Coast Line signal bridges such as this one, which date back to the early 1940's. The second locomotive is Amtrak 184 which is painted in the company's Phase IV paint scheme in honor of Amtrak's 40th anniversary. Earlier in the day 184 experienced some mechanical issues and was unable to lead, hence the additional engine on the point.
