This is the only buddhist temple in Angkor and allegedly has 216 gigantic faces on the temple towers which are supposed to represent king Jayavarman VII who built the temple. There are also people who argue that the faces belong to the bodhisattva of compassion called Avalokitesvara or Lokesvara. Ancient Khmer monarchs regarded themselves as god-kings and its probable that Jayavarman VII being a buddhist regarded himself as the buddha and had his faces made on the towers!
