A hoje Casa da Cultura de Recife funcionou como casa de detenção de 1867 a 1973, quando foi fechada pelo governo estadual. O prédio possui 8.400 metros quadrados de área construída e 6.000 metros quadrados de pátio externo. Em 14 de abril de 1976 o local começou a funcionar como Casa da Cultura e hoje é um centro de cultura regional e um dos pontos turísticos obrigatórios da cidade. Suas antigas celas são ocupadas por lojas de artesanato, livraria e lanchonetes.

The House of Culture in Recife served as house arrest from 1867 to 1973, when it was closed by the state government.
