Having lived in the west for 12 years, I am very familiar with California gulls. I think that some of the features in the photos could be construed as indicating California gull (the bird's size, beak shape and color). However, I don't think that any of the photos are conclusive enough to conclude (on their evidence alone) that the bird is a California gull and not a rather small smithsonianus herring..
