Gulls at Horseshoe Lake, 12 April 2014

Horseshoe Lake in Loveland (Larimer County) Colorado is a gull hotspot, especially when the water level is low. This spring appears to be a good season for gulls as the southeast lobe is mostly mud, with some deep puddles good for bathing (from a gull's perspective). These photos were mostly digiscoped late in the afternoon (last 2 hrs of daylight). About 600 adult California Gulls were loafing here, apparently staging prior to heading off to a breeding colony (maybe Riverside Reservoir in Morgan County??), and 80+ pink-breasted adult Franklin's Gulls. The photos focused on the more unusual species - lingering Herring and Lesser Black-backed Gulls.
