Atlantic Brant at Chatfield State Park, Jefferson County, Colorado, 30 Nov 2011
The two birds were at Kingfisher Point in the southwest corner of Chatfield Reservoir at dusk. There were thousands of "white-cheeked" geese (Lesser Canada and Richardson's Cackling)arriving and staging for what appeared to be migration flight ahead of the cold front, but these two Brant were more interested in eating grass with a flock of American Wigeon and Mallards (there was a good number of Moffit's/Giant Canada Geese around too). The "pale-bellied" form of Brant (breeds within Arctic Circle in northeast Canada) is extremely rare in Colorado.
NOTE: These are apparently from the "Gray-bellied" population rather than the "Atlantic" population.
