Photographs of Afghanistan, mostly in Kabul in 1967-68. Dr. Bill Podlich, photographer. Scanned from slides and restored by C. Esterson.

I now have a new slide scanner and here are its first results. The Plustek scanner has dust removal and the two pictures are a comparison. Last photo update: March 2013.

I was a Peace Corps volunteer in Afghanistan from 1964-1966. Even though the rural areas were conservtive and poor, they were mostly peaceful - and the Afghans were extremely friendly. I worked with the Afghan cabinet members who organized the first free elections in the country at that time. They begged America for financial help, but received only a pittance because the aid they wanted wasn't "showy". I worked at the Afghan Ministry of Justice with many western educated men and Afghan mullahs. I was the first woman and first foreignor ever to work there. The Afghan men treated me very kindly and with great respect. It was a wonderful country. Sadly, the Afghan officials that I worked with were slaughtered by the communists. - Edie

yea it may have still been like it is now in that era, but its amazing to see that there was a part of that country was living freely, with out violence! It is appalling to know that the country I live in has helped encourage what the country is today, but hey if we threw up some photos of that era in the United States right now it'd look the same. We can't forget our history and its happening so fast, before you know it we the United States could be exactly like that.

Yes the country was and is mostly rural and the pics of urban life may have been the exception, but they show a real place and time that are now worlds away.
It is fascinating and heart breaking to see what Afghanistan was like before religious and cultural war tore it apart... especially when you consider our (the US's) role in encouraging and financing the people who helped destroyed it.

These photos depict only 0.01% of Afghans during that era. Afghanistan was still a highly conservative and underdeveloped nation then as it is now. This is a small microcosm of Afghan society and absolutely not representative of the Afghan people.

Hi, my grandfather was a diplomat in the Middle East for almost 20 years and he used to tell me about how progressive and liberal places like Afghanistan and Iran used to be. He said that the first place he saw mini-skirts outside of London was Kabul, and how Kabul University was competing with MIT and Harvard for the best International Post-Graduate students.

I am the daughter of Noor Mohammad Jabarkhail born in Kabul June 6 1946. He was in a general served his country. We moved to America in 1984 he passed away in July 1995
I was hoping to see if anyone has any information or can help me find anything about him. He has 4 daughters, if anyone can help please email me info@stoneexclusif.com
I have pictures of him in Russia, DC , well traveled and also a soccer player

It seems that afghanistan changed very rapidly in a reverse way... See the prouded and sophisticated old times, it unbelieveable and uncampareable... Thanks guys for posting these pics and showing the world that we loved our country and always well.

i saw KANDHAR movie thats why i was worried that situation in afghanistan is too bad. i mean the buildings that were shown in movie were ruined dirty and compact. but i see here pictures they say that it not that bad thanks

I very much enjoyed your picture gallery of Afghanistan. We lived in Kabul in the 1970s. I have just one comment, I am quite sure that the picture you have labelled 'Kyber Pass' is in fact the 'Kabul Gorge' through which we drove many times on our way down to Peshawar via Jalalabad.
