Big Bend, April 2019

At last, back to the Big Bend, last seen by my Jeep and me ca. 2003. This time focused on the BB Ranch State Park, to the west of the national park. Went 27 dirt road miles in to the amazing Sauceda (old ranch) ranger station. Drove more dirt roads, probably close to 100. A supercharged Buick GS masquerading as a Jeep. Dust on and in everything.

Reminded me of Cairo. No escaping dust.

Stayed two nights, $40 per, in the old modernized bunkhouse. Way cool. Thirty beds, I was the only one there.

I prepared for hundreds of hours to shoot a lot of film with many different cameras. I took fewer than a dozen pictures for one reason or another. So, until I develop those, these are from my phone.

Spent a few hours in Ojinaga, Mexico. Thirteen years ago I walked across the bridge, dropped a dime into the Mexican toll box, and I was there. Now, a mass of buildings, the pedestrian path is over on the other side of the bridge, and you have to go through a minimal package check security on the Mexican side. There is even a soldier with an M-16 to keep American asylum seekers from setting foot on Mexican soil. :) And now it costs a quarter to go back to the US.

Like Cd. Acuna, the town is no longer a tourist destination. Much deader than when I was there those years ago. I had to search for a restaurant that wasn't shuttered. All because of 9/11, the need for passports, and scary security.
