One of many cinder cones in the "crater" of Haleakala volcano (~10,000'). The central "crater" is a huge feature many miles across, but it is not a volcanic crater (proper) but rather an erosional feature.
On the day that I was there it was fairly cold and we had some sleet and even a few snow flakes -- none of which stuck to the ground. Not a big deal really, but this was accompanied by a lot of fog and clouds which cut visibility down to almost nothing at times. Fortunately the weather cleared up towards the end of the day and allowed us to get some good views of and from the summit area.
