Water Holes Slot Canyon

Water Holes Slot Canyon is a nice little gem of a slot canyon. While it’s not as beautiful or well known as Antelope Canyon, it’s still a great place to visit with just a fraction of the visitors (we only saw one other couple when we were there). A bonus is that it's very accessible. Highway 89 actually spans the canyon and the parking area is just on the side of 89 about six miles south of Page.

We hiked upstream to see the eastern side of the canyon. It’s an out and back hike with the same point used to descend/ascend out of the canyon. It’s a little steep with some loose rocks/dirt to get into the canyon, but once in there it’s flat and easy going. Despite its name, it was dry when we visited. The canyon is wide for about fifteen minutes of walking and then it starts to narrow down. We hiked through the slot until we reached the large cavern, then we turned around (the only way to continue is to climb some faint Moki steps and a too short ladder). We spent around an hour or so in the canyon.

Water Holes Slot Canyon is on Navajo land and a $5 permit is required (we got ours in Cameron on the way to Page, but a permit can also be obtained around Page).

And as a side note, due to some technical difficulties with our camera (a Canon Rebel Xti DSLR), most of these pictures were taken hand held with a point and shoot camera (Canon Powershot A710). It was frustrating using a point and shoot camera after being accustomed to our DSLR, but with the help of some post processing (mainly noise reduction and white balance adjustment) I was pleasantly surprised at how it performed.
