Because Steve intended to hike both Wetterhorn and Uncompahgre we camped close to the Matterhorn Creek trailhead (Nellie Creek trailhead is another option for Uncompahgre). We heard a little rain throughout the night, but were not expecting a coating of snow when we woke up. It was gorgeous! Steve was up early for his hike and Norah and I followed a few hours later. We weren't planning to hike Uncompahgre, instead opting for a hike to the "pass" between Matterhorn and Uncompahgre. I say "pass" because it wasn't a pass in a traditional sense - more of a flat height of land before continuing up to either Matterhorn or Uncompahgre. From this vantage point we had great views and we really enjoyed our hike in the winter wonderland. The snow made it more of a challenge for Steve climbing Uncompahgre (mainly the snow was obscuring the trail) and we saw him as he was returning from the summit. By this point Wetterhorn was completely socked in by the clouds and Steve opted instead for a quick jaunt up Matterhorn. When we started our return hike most of the snow had melted. In the end Norah and I hiked around 6.5 to 7 miles with ~2000 feet elevation gain (we had some road walk up to the trailhead, so was a little longer than hiking from the trailhead itself). This would have been a nice hike anyway, but the snow really added to the scenery and it was a lovely day in the San Juan Mountains. We also enjoyed the stand of aspens by our campsite and took some pictures before we were off to our next trailhead (Shavono and Tabeguache Peak in the Sawatch Range).
