Stud Horse Point and Thousand Pockets

We hadn't originally planned to visit Stud Horse Point or Thousand Pockets, but found ourselves with some extra time so thought we'd check them out. These are located off back roads in the same general vicinity (the turn off is 5.6 miles north of Glen Canyon Dam on US 89) and while we still had Rick's jeep, it was only necessary for a sandy section near the parking area for Thousand Pockets. Stud Horse Point is more easily accessible and requires no hiking. There is a small collection of pedestal rocks and some nice views back towards Lake Powell.

Thousand Pockets is an area located near the rim of the Lower Paria River Gorge that requires an off trail hike (we used Kelsey's book to get there). We walked down a sandy wash then veered to our left (south) and aimed for the "Big Brain and Cauliflower Rocks" (this required a little climb in elevation). I'm sure this area is really cool after a rain fills the pockets, but it was pretty neat even dry. It was like a large rock playground and we had a lot of fun climbing and exploring this area. If you are in the Page area for a few days and have already hit the main attractions, these two spots are nice excursions.
