Sam's Point Preserve, October '14

Sam's Point Preserve is a beautiful spot on the Shawangunk Ridge. The eight mile loops packs a lot in with the ice caves, Verdeerkill Falls, the cliffs and views from High Point, the remains from the blueberry picker shacks, and interesting flora including dwarf pines, stands of birch trees, and forests more typical of the area. Sam's Point is a wonderful destination any time of year, but it is especially beautiful in the fall. The huckleberry bushes turn a brilliant red color creating a sea of color punctuated by green pines and the yellow leaves of birches. It had been a few years since we had hiked there in fall, so we were happy to return this October for a great hike. It is definitely on my short list for best fall hikes in the area!
