Enfield Creek winds it way through Robert Treman State Park; creating waterfalls and beautiful scenery throughout the gorge. There are two entrances to the park and we camped in the campground located at the lower entrance (about fifteen minutes south of Ithaca). Also at the lower entrance are picnic areas and Lower Falls. Lower Falls (also called Enfield Falls) is a beautiful 70 foot waterfall in its own right, but is also an attraction because it has lifeguards and a roped off section for swimming. The water was a chilly 50 degrees when we were there, so swimming would have to wait for a future summer trip.
From the lower parking lot we hiked the Gorge Trail (2.25 miles one way) to Lucifer Falls at the upper end. Lucifer Falls can be seen from the upper entrance with only a short walk (including stairs), but we enjoyed the hike through the gorge. There were other small falls to see, as well as flowers and nice spring greenery along the nicely maintained trail. At the top we spent some time by the 115 foot Lucifer Falls and explored Old Mill, which still had original machinery from the mill that operated there from 1839 to 1917. I also liked the exhibits that provided some history and information about the area. We started back on the rim trail (also 2.25 miles one way) and had a nice view of Lucifer Falls from across the gorge. We walked down the 222 steps in the Cliff Staircase and had another view of Lucifer Falls, this time from the bottom. We crossed the bridge and returned via the Gorge Trail from this point.
It was a sunny, blue sky day and it was fantastic for hiking, but wasn't as great for pictures. On our next day we returned in the evening for some pictures of Lucifer Falls. The light was better for pictures and there were also fewer people. If you are staying nearby, an evening visit is definitely a nice time to stop by!
