Passo Pordoi: Take 1

On our first day in Canazei, we woke to blue skies. It was a go for hiking! We had breakfast at the hotel and walked to the Belvedere chairlift. We purchased one way tickets and up we went. We reached the top and walked out to a small overlook just in time to catch the last blue sky of the day. We were amazed at how quickly the morning had gone from clear, blue skies to completely cloudy.

We made the short walk down around Sass Becce to Passo Pordoi (2239m) and debated about what to do. With an eye on the weather, we decided to go ahead and start up the trail to Forcella Pordoi (2829m) to at least stretch our legs. As we kept climbing up, the pass stayed clear and we decided to just go ahead and go for it. The mileage was short, but it was steep - nearly 600m/2000ft. Part way up Norah spotted a kid ahead of her and wanted to catch him, so she put on her turbo boosters and we made it in about 1.5 hours (book time listed at one hour).

We reached the forcella and found everything completely socked in and we decided hiking to Piz Boe was out of the question. Instead we made the short hike (~20 minutes, 100m/330feet) to Sass Pordoi and had lunch at the restaurant. The skies were threatening rain so Norah and I took the cable car down and Steve ran down. We barely beat him down - he did it in 18 minutes. I'm glad we took the cable car because it did start to rain when we arrived at the bottom. We had about an hour to kill before we caught the bus to Canazei and passed the time browsing in the trinket shops. The weather didn't cooperate but at least we got to hike to Forcella Pordoi, which we had to scrap from our itinerary last year due to snow. And we did get a second shot at the hike a few days later and it was pretty spectacular - worth the second try!

Back in Canazei Norah made a beeline for the park near our hotel and did the zipline a number of times. I think she would have stayed there until dark if it hadn't started to rain. We rested in the hotel and when it was time for dinner it had cleared up. We walked about thirty minutes on the path to Campitello and had dinner there (pizza again - very tasty), walked back to Canazei for dessert, and hit the bed for a good night of sleep.
