Delaware Water Gap Weekend - Mt. Tammany Race, George W. Childs waterfalls, and bird banding March '14

Steve had his first race of the season at Mt. Tammany in the Delaware Water Gap and we decided to make a weekend out of it. We stayed in Stroudsburg Friday night and were up early the next morning to take Steve to the race. They started at 6:30 am and had ten loops to do over Mt. Tammany. Each loop was four miles and 1200 feet elevation gain over a rocky, technical course. And thanks to our wicked winter, the descent was full of ice, snow, and slush which slowed everybody down. The cutoff is starting the tenth loop by ten hours. Steve finished in 10 hours 50 minutes - great race!

Originally I thought Norah and I would hike the mountain too, but with the icy conditions we opted for other activities. We found a bird banding program being held at the Monroe County Conservation District's Environmental Education Center and enjoyed watching the "Ring and Fling" process. The birds were caught in a net and removed to small cotton bags. The birds were weighed, measured, banded, and released. We enjoyed the program.

On Sunday we took a short walk at the George W. Childs Recreation Area. This area was originally a state park and recently reopened in 2013 with a revamped trail. There was still a lot of ice so we wore our microspikes. We walked on the trail, stairs, and bridges to view three different waterfalls, which were really flowing.
