Water Spout in Lago Nordenskjold

After finishing our scramble in the Valle del Frances, we hiked out of the valley and continued on to Albergue Los Cuernos where we camped for the night.

There were still some strong wind gusts on the trail from Campamento Italiano to Los Cuernos and once we reached Lago Nordenskjold -- yowzers! The wind had turned the lake into a mini ocean. There were large waves and occasional water spouts or walls of water being picked up by the wind. Especially when were out of the trees and a gust came up, we had to "assume the position" (back to the wind to avoid dirt in the eyes and crouched down for stability) until the gust passed. The wind gusts and water spouts, along with the guidebook's warning of few sheltered tent sites at Cuernos, made it a "six guyout night" for the tent (until now we hadn't needed all six guyouts). I'm happy to report that our tent was a champ and made it safely through the night (we did meet a lady later on in our trip who didn't fare so well in some of the winds. One night the wind snapped her tent poles and ripped the tent).
