We walked pass this lake to start climbing the ridge to Cirque Peak, which was through heavy, deep, red dirt. Which really wasn't hiking or scrambling as much as it was slogging. Although coming back down it was a snap -- kind of like 'scree skiing' (reminded me of Mt. Doom in Tongariro, NZ).
