Sinnataggen

Postcard photo: Urpo A. Tarmanen

After the slow pace and tranquility of the fjords, we were a little disoriented by the hustle and bustle of Oslo when we arrived at the main train station. We checked into Cochs Pensjonat and walked to the main harbor for dinner. June 7th was the centennial celebration of Norway's independence (1905 was the dissolution of the union between Sweden and Norway) and a lot of boats (miltary and civilian) were in the harbor in preparation for the celebration. Unfortunately, we missed seeing the Tall Ships and the USS Saipan (huge aircraft carrier) which arrived after we left.

We had planned on doing some souvenir shopping, but everything closes down at 6 in Oslo (?), so we instead caught the tram to Vigelandsparken. Vigeland Park contains the work of sculptor Gustav Vigeland and has over 200 sculptures. Vigeland also helped design the park, which has a really nice layout that flows nicely with his work. The sculptures were fantastic and his most famous, Sinnataggen, lived up to advance billing. Sinnataggen translates to "little hot head", but I much prefer the "angry baby". It was drizzling/raining while we were there, so unfortunately I wasn't able to get any pictures. :(
