Throughout the fjord we saw a few groupings of houses/farms, most of which are only accessible by boat. One of the farms in this valley was operational up until a few years ago when the farmer was killed by his tractor (he was 85 and in superb shape -- apparently he could do the broom dance. not sure what that is, but it's something that most 85 year olds can't do). The plateaus at the top of the fjord used to be home to large herds of reindeer, which provided for these small settlements through the winter (they did as the American Indians did with the bison -- ran them off the cliffs and collected them at the bottom).
