Mt. Aylmer (from Kelman Hut)

Our potential plan for Day 4 was to climb Mt. Aylmer. I had to pay a visit to the loo at five in the morning and it was just gorgeous out -- enough light from the moon to clearly see the mountains and gleaming white snow in the inky blue sky. I was psyched because it was calm and clear. Different story when we woke up at 7:00 am. The clouds had started to roll in and we opted to get outside anyway. We headed out of the hut and over to a small col below the hut. Because I was first, I had to test the crevasses before crossing them -- a nice reason to not be first. :) We peeked over the edge of the col and continued on to the coulier below the helipad (near the hut). There wasn't enough snow to effectively climb the coulier so we set our sights on the col between Mt. Aylmer and Hochstetter Dome (across the valley from Kelman Hut). It was tiring work breaking trail, trying not to trip on the crampons, trying to keep the crampons clear of balled up snow, and keeping a steady pace up the slopes. We took a somewhat indirect route as our intention wasn't necessarily to climb and we had to redirect several times to avoid unpassable crevasses. When we reached the col, Lisa deemed the weather good enough for us to go ahead and climb Aylmer. We unroped and prepared to climb, our route being the ridge seen on the left of the mountain.
