After we emptied our packs and put away all the food, we roped up and headed up the mountain behind the hut. We practiced hiking while roped up, which basically means keeping the rope between people at the right tautness and hiking at the same pace. We hiked up to a small col above the hut and peaked over the edge to see the Mannering Glacier and a large ice fall, while being mindful of potential cornice formation from the west wind (i.e. not getting too close to the edge to avoid potentially standing on snow overhanging the rock). Next we walked down from the col and found a spot to practice building snow anchors. The snow was too soft for a vertical anchor with a snow stake, so we learned how to build a horizontal "T" anchor.
