We had an excellent hike to Nuvolau, but our day wasn't done yet. After riding the cable car back to Lagazuoi and getting a drink, we hiked to the top of Piccolo Lagazuoi behind the hut (2778m/9115 ft). This led to the Austrian troop path, called Kaiserjaeger, which was the connection between the bottom of the valley and the Austrian position on Lagazuoi. It was used to supply food, munitions, and equipment. The path has been restored (including a suspension bridge) and can be used to descend to Pass Falzarego.
