We camped one night at East Rosebud Campground in Custer Gallatin National Forest. This campground is first come, first served, so I was sure to avoid a Friday or Saturday night stay. It was under two hours to drive there from Billings and we had no problems getting a site when we arrived. After setting up, we made the short walk down to the trailhead to hike to Elk Lake. This hike had a favorable reward:effort ratio. The hike was easy - seven miles round trip with only 800 feet elevation gain and for that effort we had terrific views. We spent most of the afternoon at the lake, which was lovely. There were quite a few people in and out - this is a popular stop on the twenty five mile Beaten Path hike that goes from East Rosebud Lake to Cooke City (and at times the lake looked more like the setting of Dogs Gone Wild). There is a nice small “beach” area that is a great place to sit and enjoy an afternoon. Sweet spot!
