We slept in on our second day and started off with breakfast at the Pirate Restaurant. We had a fruit plate, donuts, and a very tasty cream and ricotta croissant then were off to hike the coastal path to Corniglia (4 km/2.5 miles). This is a hilly section of the coastal trail, the trail winding through vineyards and lots of vegetation. Unfortunately the other segments of the coastal path from Corniglia to Riomaggiore were closed and that was as far as we could go on the coastal path. It turned out to be a moot point though because Steve didn’t feel well when we arrived at Corniglia. Corniglia is a quiet, small town perched high on the cliffs above the water. Because it is more remote than the other towns it doesn’t get as many visitors and felt more laid back. We walked through the quaint main street and Norah and I got some focaccia, a lemon granita, and a fragole smoothie. We took our snacks to Santa Maria Belvedere at the end of the street and admired the scenic views. We scrapped our plans to hike to Manarola, walked the 385 steps down to the train station and caught a train heading north. We didn't spend much time in Corniglia, but still enjoyed our brief visit.
