Beskid Niski is a mountain range (well, it's hills really) in the S-SE of Poland. Together with Bieszczady (still further east) it is the wildest and least densly populated part of Poland. It's a region with long and complicated history of coexistence of various ethnic and religious groups. Also, during WWI the Russian vs. Austria-Hungary front stalled there for months, causing heavy losses on both sides. Some 61000 soldiers, many un-identified are buried in more than 360 graveyards. For these reasons, churches (Roman Catholic, Greek Catholic, Orthodox), chapels, and crosses are perhaps the most characteristic features of the landscape of that region.
