Under the dome (redux).

This is an inversion of this original image. I entered the original in the Fungi Show and Tell contest (see other entrants here) where it scored a second place (here). The judge mentioned in his comments that he preferred the inverted version because his first impression of the original was that it was a negative. Thus, I tried it myself and have posted it for all to see.

After looking at it a bit more, I think I prefer the original because its brightest areas are also the sharpest (as I intended when I shot it). In this inverted version, the darker areas are now the sharper ones and now the compositional elements are conflicting: bright is not sharp in the negative version, but bright and sharp are in the same place in the original.

I always find it interesting how I get locked into my original vision -- the thought of treating it as a negative and inverting it never occurred to me. I think I still prefer the original, but that may just be my preference for black backgrounds ;) This is one of the big reasons why I sometimes revisit images after some time has passed: the original vision has faded and I can sometimes find something new and often better than the original vision hiding in the image. Yet another reason why they call it "art"!
