Kuldiga is a true gem. It has arguably the most romantic old town in Latvia that is both well preserved and quite large. You can walk there for hours and hours, enjoying the rugged appearance of old wooden homes with authentic details like the strangely shaped characteristinc chimneys, hand-crafted doors. Venta river and its waterfall, which is the second widest in Europe, add a lot of value. Its small tributary Aleksupite flows directly between buildings.
Kuldinga became a manufacturing center when it was one of the centers of the Dutchy of Kurland in 17th century, but has remained a very sleepy place since then. The absence of railways has clearly helped as well as being away from frontlines both during the First and Second World war, unlike many other places in Latvia that were devastated.
The old town was in a rather poor shape a few years ago, but is being beautifully restored with the kind help from European Structural Funds.
