Aluksne

Aluksne is a regional centre in North East Vidzeme that is well worth a visit, for about half a day. It is located on the shores of a very picturesque eponymous lake. It is possible to walk to an island with castle ruins dating from Livonian era when the place was called Marienburg. There are several nice buildings in the centre - church, a small 19th century palace once owned by Fietinghof family. Also town's parks are enjoyable. Believe it or not, but the average height of 200m makes it the highest town in Latvia. North from Aluksne there are hilly areas that are truly pleasing to the eye.
