Agenskalns is definitely one of the most interesting neighbourhoods in Riga. It is located on the left bank of Daugava in areas that are directly opposite to the Downtown. It was one of the earliest suburbs in Riga, the current housing stock was mostly built in few decades before WW1. Unlike other "wooden" suburbs, which in that era housed mostly workers, this was more preferred by middle class. One can still feel it today. It is one of the most desirable places for living in the city. While the place was quite run down at the end of Soviet era, gentrification is now proceeding rapidly.
