This collection of photos is mostly from my employment in the winter of 2006 with the Colorado Division of Wildlife's Lynx Reintroducion Program. In 1998, after almost 30 years since lynx were extirpated from Colorado due mainly to trapping, the CDOW started an aggressive program to bring these federally threatened feline carnivores back to the lower Rocky Mountains. After releasing lynx captured in Canada and Alaska for 7 years, the only way to ensure this new population would survive was to monitor the success of breeding and juvenile survival. My work for the project inclded capturing year-old lynx kittens born in Colorado from transplanted females and attaching radio and satellite collars to them. By monitoring and tracking the next generation of cats, biologists are able to determine if self-sustaining populations of lyxn can co-exist with the rise in human activity in Colorado. |
