The Glory Hunter

We were out and about in a very remote part of the Black Hills, following Castle Creek up. Bud and I were out of the truck taking some pics of the creek, when I heard "Hello there". It startled me something fierce, and I looked around and at first didn't see anyone...Then I saw some movement on the edge of the creek, and this character popped up from along side the stream.

My first thought was of Karen Steubing, http://www.pbase.com/image/62495350 and some of her sojourns up the hollers of West Virginia lol but after visiting with this gentleman he turned out to be very interesting...I learned his life story in a matter of minutes and it turned out he was the owner of the Glory Hunter Gold Mine which I took a picture of last year.. http://www.pbase.com/prplexd/image/55053640

He cussed the government, tourists, and civilization in general while telling me he has lived in these parts since '93 looking for the Glory Hole Vein that supplies the gold that Castle Creek washes down to his meager workings...All in all it was a delightful visit...A true hermit in todays age.

Our family took a chance and spent an entire day with Lew. It was a fantastic day, one that we will always remember. He spent time with us all, teaching us many different aspects of gold mining and its history. The experience of working together and mining all day in an authentic environment was unforgettable. That was exactly what we wanted! We did not want a little tourist-type operation. We wanted the real deal. By early evening the kids were playing by the river and Lew was helping us with the final stages of retrieving our gold with his sure-fire tray catchment system. We did get a nice little amount of gold! Most of all, the Glory Hunter is a kind, interesting man who was especially good for our kids. In just a day he taught us many valuable lessons about life, patience, and hard work. THANKS! Betsy and Todd

Not only did I find GOLD with Lew, but most importantly I found a FRIEND! A Veteran, a Patroit, a Father, and a truely passionate human being. Lew loves to talk, loves the land, loves life and loves to share his wisdom. I'm a better person by knowing him. Life could get no better because he calls me "FAMILY". Take the time to know the MAN and gain his knowlege for Gold Prospecting. HOORAH NAVY SEAL you fought for MY freedom to prospect. GOD Bless You!!!!!!!

The Glory Hunter is so awesome! He is the quintessential gold miner and he is a wealth of information and knowledge like no one I've ever seen! He is the real deal! I highly suggest that everyone should experience the man and his mine. A truly unforgettable experience! Hi Lew! It's Karen from Central City!

Had the opportunity meet Lew in person in May 2009 as we visited the area. It was his birthday and we had a chat for a while, learned a lot about gold prospecting. I didn't bring my camera with, so I was wandering if I could use this picture and the one of the Glory Hunter Mine to help in my talk at our prospecting club?

In case you come back...We printed up an 8x10, framed it, and took it out to him.

He looks a little "wild around the eyes" ;) He would have truly looked civil war era if not for the sunglasses perched on his hat. Excellent capture and treatment! V

Great story and very interesting character, portrait and pp. He would fit in here. LOL. Made me think of the song "I Dug up a Diamond" by Mark Knopfler and Emmy Lou Harris.
