Merritt Island National Wildlife Refuge is about a one hour drive east of Orlando on the east coast.
If you are planning to visit Merritt Island, you should be aware that the Wildlife Refuge closes to the public three days prior to and the day of a shuttle launch at Kennedy Space Center. The refuge is part of NASA and the Kennedy Space Center. For more information on shuttle launch closures, see
