Cape Hatteras Lighthouse is the tallest lighthouse in the United States. The beacon from the light can be seen some 20 miles out
to sea and has warned sailors for more than 100 years of the treacherous Diamond Shoals, the shallow sandbars which
extend some 14 miles out into the ocean off Cape Hatteras. It was built between 1868 and 1870 and is 210 feet to
the top of the lightning rod. The lighthouse was literally moved to safer ground in 1999 because of erosion
of the shore at the edge of the ocean.
The lighthouse could have at least chosen a better background for me! Must have known my pelican!
