This great blue heron flew out of nowhere and landed within a few feet from my wife and me. They must be incredibly used to people
at the Gilbert Preserve. I was photographing stilts at the time, and my wife yelled out, "Jay, look what's standing next to us!"
There was no time to take off the teleconverter, as I was in a state of semi-shock anyway, so the head shot was the
only possibility.
